The Importance of Information Security in Businesses

In this era of technology, businesses should be aware of the importance of information security – an essential topic for businesses to understand. Every week for the past month, FD Global Connections wrote a blog on LinkedIn, about four critical areas of Information Security. With cyber-attacks becoming more prevalent and companies hitting the headlines about losing personal client data, Information Security is big news.

Here are the key points from our series of blogs:

We started by asking, “what exactly is “Information Security”? We discovered when researching this topic that it’s a complex topic for business owners to understand, let alone apply. So, we took a step back to first learn about it.

Information security protects information from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification, perusal, inspection, recording or destruction. Information security is paramount in any market, especially as companies expand into new markets. Companies must ensure their data is secure and protected from unauthorized access, theft, and manipulation.

Information Security requires scrutiny across the business and during the course of the four weeks, we identified the key steps that leaders must take to develop and manage their Information Security policies, and practices. These are: identify, comply, implement and measure. You can read more about this here.

1 Application security is critical to any organisation’s overall security strategy. As organisations move to the cloud and adopt mobile technologies, application security is becoming increasingly important in the global market. In addition, as organisations become more reliant on technology, they must ensure that their applications are secure and compliant with industry standards. Organisations must protect themselves from malicious actors. Read the full blog here.

2. Infrastructure Security was our second topic, and we asked you to consider how secure your business is? I’m sure your physical office building has the required security in place, but what about your virtual operations such as data centres, networks, servers, and cloud-based resources? We also touched on cyber hygiene, incident response and incident response. You can read the blog here.

3. Cloud security is essential for protecting sensitive information, complying with regulations, maintaining business continuity, and ensuring safe global operations. We have all heard about “cloud storage”, but how do we secure it? The cloud is popular for businesses because it allows for cost-effective and scalable data storage and processing. However, as we have seen, cyber-attack risks increase as more companies adopt cloud technology. Therefore, protecting sensitive information and business operations from cyber threats (and a damaged reputation) is essential.

Increasingly businesses have adopted virtual policies and cloud services, which is why security is vital for growing businesses. You can read our blog here.

4. Cryptography protects sensitive information during transmission and storage in a global market business.
It is important for businesses to use strong encryption algorithms and to keep their encryption keys and digital certificates secure. Interested in learning some new language to impress your friends? Read our blog on Cryptography here.

Information Security is a critical aspect of modern business operations that requires proactive measures, ongoing education and training, and a comprehensive approach to risk management and incident response.
